What Are Local Councillors?
Local and regional elected representatives are the backbone of European democracy. As mayors, municipal councillors, and regional assembly members, they are the politicians closest to citizens. They make daily decisions about housing, transport, energy, green spaces, education, and local services. In many ways, they are where European policy meets real life.
The Greens & Progressives actively support networks that bring Green and pro-European local councillors together to exchange experience, build capacity, and amplify their voice at the European level.
Two Ways to Get Involved
There are two major networks you can join as a local or regional elected representative:
1. The EGP Green Local Councillors Network
The European Green Party’s Local Councillors Network is the community of Green local elected representatives from across Europe. It is a space to share projects, experiences and knowledge with like-minded colleagues, discover events and skill-sharing opportunities, and strengthen connections across borders.
Whether you’re a first-term municipal councillor or a long-serving regional representative, the network offers:
- Peer exchange and networking with Green local politicians across Europe
- Access to Green events, workshops and political education
- A platform to connect local action to European Green politics
2. The EU Local Councillors Network
The EU Local Councillors Network is a pan-European initiative jointly run by the European Commission and the European Committee of the Regions. With over 3,000 members from all EU member states, it brings together local and regional elected representatives, regardless of political affiliation, who are committed to communicating about the EU to their constituents and bringing Europe closer to local communities.
As a member, you receive:

- Networking opportunities with local councillors from all EU countries
- Tools and content to communicate about Europe at the grassroots level
