​A fairer, greener and more democratic Europe starts in our cities, regions and communities.

As Greens & Progressives in the Committee of the Regions, we believe that Europe’s greatest strength lies in the people and places that shape everyday life. Local and regional authorities are where ambitious ideas are turned into practical solutions: from clean transport and affordable housing to resilient economies, thriving nature and inclusive public services.

Our mission is to build a Europe that protects all people and the planet. Here are our priorities:

1. We stand for a just transition to climate neutrality that is fair, democratic and leaves no one behind.Social justice and environmental responsibility are inseparable. We oppose fossil fuel expansion, continued dependency on polluting energy systems, greenwashing and false solutions that delay real climate action or undermine environmental protection. Instead, we support decentralised and renewable energy systems that strengthen economic resilience and reduce Europe’s dependency in times of geopolitical uncertainty.

2. We support innovation, education and sustainable economic developmentas foundations for strong communities. This means a resilient economy that creates quality jobs, empowers local businesses and respects planetary boundaries, without deregulation that undermines social, environmental or democratic standards.

3. We believe in the courage of local leadership.Cities, municipalities and regions are often the first to defend fundamental rights, resist democratic backsliding and stand against discrimination. They also have a responsibility to ensure that every community is a safe and inclusive place where everyone, regardless of gender, origin, age, disability, religion, sexual orientation or identity, can live and thrive with dignity and equal rights. We reject any rollback of fundamental rights and any policy that increases inequality or weakens democratic institutions.

4. We stand for strong democracy and the rule of law,and for policies that strengthen rather than weaken them. Citizens must have a meaningful voice in shaping Europe’s future, and local and regional governments must be recognised as essential partners in delivering European action.

At a time of growing uncertainty, Europe needs cooperation more than ever. We believe in solidarity across regions and generations, within Europe and beyond its borders to address shared challenges such as climate change and inequality.

What we fight against

We stand against the forces that undermine democracy, equality, and the future of our planet:

Threats to democracy and human rights

  • Fascism, authoritarianism, democratic backsliding, and attacks on the rule of law.
  • Disinformation, misinformation, and Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference (FIMI).
  • Policies and narratives that divide communities instead of fostering solidarity and inclusion.

Climate and environmental destruction

  • Climate denial, climate delay, and inaction in the face of the climate crisis.
  • Fossil fuel dependency and interests that keep us locked into it.
  • Greenwashing, false solutions, environmental destruction, and biodiversity loss.

Social injustice and discrimination

  • Racism, xenophobia, homophobia, sexism, and all forms of hatred and intolerance.
  • Inequality, social exclusion, and the underrepresentation of women and marginalised groups in decision-making.
  • Economic models that put profits before people and the planet.

The erosion of protections

  • Deregulation that weakens social, environmental, and democratic safeguards.
  • Efforts to roll back hard-won rights and protections for people and the planet.
