Who We Are and Where We Come From

The Greens & Progressives group brings together local and regional elected representatives within the European Committee of the Regions who share a commitment to environmental responsibility, social justice, democratic participation, and European cooperation.

It serves as a political home for mayors, regional presidents, councillors, and assembly members across the EU who work to advance these values from the ground up, in their neighbourhoods, cities and regions.

The “Progressives” in our name reflects an important broadening of our group. In recent years, progressive members of the CoR who share our core values but come from beyond the traditional Green political family joined forces with us, strengthening our ability to speak with one voice on the issues that matter most to people at the local and regional level. This merger reflects our conviction that ecological and social progress are inseparable.

Part of a Broader Green Family

We are proud to be part of the wider European Green political family. The European Green Party (EGP) is the pan-European political party that unites national Green parties from across the continent around shared values: climate action, environmental protection, social justice, peace, and democracy. The EGP is our natural political home at the party level.

The Green European Foundation (GEF) is the political foundation linked to the European Green family. Funded by the European Parliament, it serves as a hub for ideas, political education, research and debate, working to build a more participative and sustainable European democracy, and bridging the gap between local activism and European policymaking.

In the European Parliament, the Greens/EFA Group is the parliamentary group that brings together Green MEPs alongside MEPs from the European Free Alliance, the Pirate parties, and independent progressives. Established in 1999, the group has been a driving force for climate ambition, human rights, and democratic renewal at the EU level since the Greens first entered the Parliament in 1984.

Together, these actors form a connected ecosystem of Green politics across Europe, from the local council chamber to the European Parliament and beyond.
