Priorities towards a sustainable and socially just future: the Greens in debate on the Annual Local and Regional Barometer with Ursula von der Leyen
Greens co-president Bernd Voss addressed European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in today’s debate on the Annual Local and Regional Barometer as part of the 140th Plenary Session of the European Committee of Regions.
Bernd Voss commented on the priorities for European Local and Regional Authorities after the Covid-19 pandemic and towards a sustainable and socially just future. During his intervention, Mr Voss argued that one of the biggest challenges at the moment will be the implementation of the pertinent changes in the realms of energy transition and climate change which will also need to include the economic and social perspectives. For that, he argued that local and regional authorities need more direct access to EU funds. Last week’s decision in the European Parliament to strengthen the EU Climate Law by increasing 2030 emissions reduction target to 60% was a good start, which should not be undermined or watered down.
Mr Voss also made reference to the responsibility towards the consequences of Europe’s global actions and the effects on our regions and close neighbours, such as the situation in Moria and the Mediterranean. He stated that Europe needs to lead by example and cannot ignore the willingness to help from municipalities and regions, which are the basis of integration.
