Statement: EU offshore strategy complements the great potential of renewable onshore wind and PV in Europe
Statement by the co-presidents, Satu Haapanen and Bernd Voß
We welcome the ambitious strategy of the EU Commission, which aims to move from 12 GW of offshore energy today to 60 GW in 2030 and 300 GW in 2050. In addition, there are 40 GW of technologies that are still in development today, such as floating wind turbines, floating PV systems as well as tides and wave power.
This shows that the Green Deal is a major industrial policy challenge and opportunity for Europe. This of course includes coordinated European maritime spatial planning and network planning as part of a European energy policy that can also strengthen the regions of Southern and Eastern Europe in particular.
We have to be quick. In order to achieve the energy and climate targets for 2030 and beyond, we will have to expand the extensive potential of wind energy on land and of PV on houses and in open spaces all over Europe. They generate renewable energies inexpensively and are quickly available and create economic power in the regions.
